PLEDGE 2 PROTECT, INC. APPLAUDS

NYC COMMISSIONER OF SANITATION KATHRYN GARCIA

New York, NY (March 17, 2014) — Pledge 2 Protect, Inc., a not-for-profit coalition asking the de Blasio administration to PUSH THE PAUSE BUTTON on the 2006 SWMP, issued the following statement in support of the newly appointed New York City Commissioner of Sanitation Kathryn Garcia’s announcement of an initiative to significantly expand the City’s composting plan:

“We applaud Ms. Garcia for committing to a serious composting plan for our city as one of her first actions on the job. Citywide composting will reduce the amount of waste going to landfills and is a bold step in the right direction toward an environmentally and economically sustainable solid waste management plan for New York City,” stated Kelly Nimmo-Guenther, president of Pledge 2 Protect, Inc.

Bertha Lewis, activist, said, “More initiatives like this, focused on waste reduction, recycling, and energy recovery will help lower pollution in over-burdened communities and reduce the need to build large, expensive Marine Transfer Stations reliant on dirty commercial waste trucks and toxic tug boats. We look forward to working with Ms. Garcia and the administration on realizing a sound waste management plan for our city.”

A recent report issued by Pledge 2 Protect, Inc. demonstrates how Marine Transfer Stations planned at East 91st Street and in Southwest Brooklyn are unnecessary and harmful, and the money saved by not building them could help accelerate composting and other steps toward a better way of managing this city’s trash. About Pledge 2 Protect, Inc.:  Pledge 2 Protect, Inc. is a growing coalition of diverse citizens of the City who are working together to protect the health and safety of New Yorkers by raising awareness of the fiscal, environmental and community impacts of the City’s current solid waste management system and plan. Although Pledge 2 Protect was initially founded to alert the City’s elected officials about the risks of building the East 91st Street Marine Transfer Station, our purpose and mission have expanded. We have always said that transfer stations do not belong in residential neighborhoods — anywhere. Many communities have borne disproportionate loads in handling New York City’s waste, and the goal should be to reduce those impacts across the board, not shift them. New Yorkers deserve a plan driven by modern solid waste solutions that are more sustainable and cost-effective for the long run. www.pledge2protectnyc.org
