In a major victory for labor groups and environmental advocates, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration will begin implementing a “zoned-collection” system for the city’s private carting industry, undertaking an historic change in how commercial waste is collected and managed in New York City.

Jodi McGrath was crossing First Avenue at E. 92nd Street when she was struck by a garbage truck taking a left turn onto the avenue, a stone’s throw from her home at the Holmes Towers.

Via New York Daily News: Vigil for pedestrian killed by dump truck in Manhattan raises protest against local transfer station

Friends and neighbors of an Upper East Side woman killed by a dump truck while crossing a street near her home used a candlelight vigil to voice concerns over a transfer station in the neighborhood.

Jodi McGrath, 55, was crossing First Ave. at E. 92nd St. at 4:30 a.m. on March 15 when a privately operated garbage truck hit her as it turned left onto the avenue, according to authorities.

McGrath died a short time later at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
